Meghalaya Announces Its 1st Ever Fashion Week in Shillong
- 2 Days of Glamorous Fashion To be Held in October 19-20



New Delhi, September 12, 2012: The first ever Fashion week in the Adobe of Clouds- Meghalaya was announced today at a Press Conference held in the Meghalaya House. The designers Jenjum Gadi, Anand Bhushan, Gaurav & Ritika, Sophia M Sangma, along with the Officials from the Directorate of Sericulture and Weaving were present for the announcement. The exclusive fashion presentation “Shillong Fashion Week” (SFW) is scheduled for October 19-20 and is initiated by the State of Meghalaya under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma. Some of the other designers who are participating are Elizabeth Marbaniang, Heritage Mizoram, Amoii, Bung By Bung, Rapbor, Magic- N and Latynrai all regional designers from the north east.

Addressing on the initiative Shri B.C.H. Hajong, Joint Director for Directorate of Sericulture & weaving said, “Fashion is something which has always been an integral part of life. It gives us a unique style for expressing our moods & life. We are very proud and excited to host such a glamorous event. This initiative aims to raise awareness on fashion and current trends among the people of Meghalaya and neighbouring states.


Julie Deb, Co-founder of Shillong Fashion Week expressed, “This first of its kind fashion fete is going to be a big platform for local designers and models to showcase their talent. It’s an initiative to get Meghalaya recognised as a fashion city. We are all set for a successful show and there are many more to come.


The aim is to promote Shillong as next fashion hub of the North East and to promote Business of fashion in the region. This fashion fiesta unlocks new opportunities for national designers and encourages the local designers to enhance their creativity. The event provides a great platform to promote the Rich Tribal Textile by dedicating Day 1 of SFW as “Day of the Tribes”. This event is an initiative to put Meghalaya’s rich art, culture, textile through a mainstream fashion show format.


This is for the first time that tribal designers based in the North East with technical background will be showcasing their creations on leading models like Rachel Bayros, Arya Bhatt and Tamara Moss are part of the 25 model’s sourced for SFW, among the 25 are our Local Models Daphi Shullai, Ketho, Emily and Mamuani.


The fashion extravaganza will showcase the creations of popular designers such as Jenjum Gadi, Anand Bhushan, Gaurav and Ritika, Nachiket Barve and Dev R Nil. Most of the participating designers have already been a part of the prestigious Wills Lifestyle India and Lakme Fashion weeks earlier, and have gained a lot of recognition for their designs. This first ever Fashion week in the North-East will also introduce some very talented debut designers from the region.

Shillong was and I am sure still is a very fashionable place. It is in the fitness of things that Shillong lead the way.
