Launch of Awareness Program on Standards & Labeling

for Air Conditioners in West Bengal

Over 600 showroom salesman in Kolkata to be trained on benefits of energy saving by demonstrating the short pay-back period of higher star rated Air Conditioners

Kolkata 10th June, 2010--- Bureau of Energy Efficiency BEE, a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Power, has embarked on a national education programme on star labeling for air conditioners. Emerson Climate Technologies and International Copper Promotion Council of India are supporting BEE’s endeavor to educate consumers to use higher energy efficient products. This is being done through a comprehensive education program, targeting A/C showroom salesmen so that they can explain the tangible benefits of using energy efficient air-conditioners to the end users.

This summer, BEE is targeting over 600salesmen in Kolkata. BEE’s 2010 national target is to train 5,000 salesmen across India. These trained salesmen will help consumers make an energy efficient choice while buying their home air conditioners. BEE will provide touch screen Energy-Calculating kiosks at the designated showrooms. These easy-to-use kiosks will enable salesmen to calculate the savings users can get on their electricity bill if they buy higher star air-conditioners.  College students have been involved by Emerson to train these salesmen. For a wider reach, a dedicated web site -- www.saveenergy.co.in -- has been created with all necessary information including the energy calculator.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sandeep Garg, Energy Economist BEE said, “The unprecedented heat this summer has led to a huge surge in sales of Air conditioners. To bridge the existing gap in supply and demand of energy in India, these newly acquired appliances will have to become more and more energy efficient. BEE has taken the mantle by making the labeling standard mandatory. We are now educating end users across India about how the usage of more energy efficient products (higher star A/Cs) will reduce their monthly electricity bills.”

As a committed partner in this exercise, Emerson Climate Technologies has been actively collaborating in these education initiatives. Mr. Arup Majumdar, Global Program Director, Emerson Climate Technologies (India) Pvt. Limited, said - “Transition of the market to the most efficient 5-star Air Conditioners will go a long way in eliminating the electricity shortage in our country. Showroom salesmen can greatly influence the buying decision of Air Conditioners and hence, various engineering college students have been pressed into service to train salesmen across the country.  Emerson believes in the responsible use of energy. We are introducing increasingly more efficient scroll compressors for air-conditioning and conducting market education of the channel and end users.”

The star labelling program for, air-conditioners, frost free refrigerators Tubular Florescent Lights and Distribution Transformers began in May 2006 in a voluntary phase. In the air-conditioner segment 70% of the organised players adapted it in the voluntary stage itself, which prompted BEE to make it mandatory from 7th January 2010.

Since star labeling was a new concept for appliance showrooms and end users, BEE partnered with Emerson Climate Technologies and International Copper Promotion Council (India) in 2008 to start several initiatives to educate the market on the benefits of star labeling. Training sessions were conducted for store salesmen throughout India. Post the education programme, a survey was conducted across 19 cities covering over 1,200 salesmen and 400 users to understand their perception on star labeling.  The survey results showed that end users cared about energy efficiency, price and brand. The survey also indicated that salesmen needed more education and sales tools to explain to the end user the concept of payback period.

How the Star-Labeling works

Refer Table-1. For Air conditioners, the star levels are categorized over a band of COP numbers. COP is the Co-efficient Of Performance, which indicates the amount of cooling capacity in watts the Air conditioner delivers for every watt of electrical energy consumed by it.

At present, for Air conditioners, the COP has to be minimum 2.3 to qualify for 1 star rating. COP of 3.1 and above is 5 star categories. BEE has plans to move up the energy efficiency level continuously every two years
