88 installations from ThyssenKrupp Elevator for the first high-speed rail route in South Africa

Right on time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the fastest trains on the African continent enter service in Johannesburg

With the production and installation of 25 escalators and twelve elevators, ThyssenKrupp Elevator is already one of the most important suppliers to the South African "Gautrain" rail project. The first section of the route runs from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Sandton in the north of the city. The journey takes less than 15 minutes on the new train, which can travel at up to 160 kilometers per hour - the first of its kind on the African continent. In addition to Sandton station, which is located 45 meters underground, further stops are the ground level Marlboro station and the elevated Rhodesfield station, which have also been fitted with systems from ThyssenKrupp Elevator. They enable passengers and soccer fans to access the platforms and exits quickly, safely and conveniently.

ThyssenKrupp Elevator will also be involved in the construction of the second section of the route extending to the South African capital, Pretoria. The company has already been awarded a contract for a further five stations comprising a total of 24 escalators and 27 elevators. Once completed, the "Gautrain" rail network will be around 80 kilometers long. The journey time from Johannesburg to Pretoria will then be more than halved, taking approx. 40 minutes. That makes the new high-speed train a genuine alternative to the busy roads in this densely populated region.

The Elevator Technology business area brings together the ThyssenKrupp Group's global activities in passenger transportation systems. With 42,500 employees, sales of 5.3 billion euros in fiscal 2008/2009 and customers in 150 countries, ThyssenKrupp Elevator is one of the world's leading elevator companies. The company's portfolio includes passenger and freight elevators, escalators and moving walks, passenger boarding bridges, stair and platform lifts as well as tailored service solutions for all products. 900 locations around the world provide an extensive sales and service network to guarantee closeness to customers.
