SMS  SIEMAG
SMS Siemag wins contract for modernization of JSPL caster with largest slab cross section in India

SMS Siemag will modernize the slab caster at the Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, India, works of Jindal Steel & Power Limited.
The revamp is designed to expand JSPL’s line of quality steel grades and  slab dimensions . To this end, JSPL will add to its portfolio high-tech pipe and tube grades (API), high-carbon steels and microalloyed peritectic grades. The current slab size of max. 2,600 mm width and max. 280 mm thickness will be increased to 3,000 mm width and 300 mm thickness. The plant is rated for an annual production of 1.3 million t of steel slabs. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2013.
As part of the  modernization, SMS Siemag will supply a completely new strand guide system. The ladle turret will be retained. The existing hydraulic systems will be upgraded in line with the new requirements.  The modernization, scope will also include  SMS Siemag’s  supply of the dummy bar system, new molds  as well as a new run-out with new torch cutting equipment.

Also  included in the supply scope will be the complete X-Pact electrical  and automation package, including the control systems and process models.

The equipment of the caster comprises several ISC modules (Intelligent Slab Casting) which are decisive to the  quality of the product and production. Among these are remote-adjustable narrow sides of the mold for width changes and  taper adjustments during casting (online) and position-controlled segment adjustments for performing Dynamic Soft Reduction. The manufacture of slabs of high internal quality is thus guaranteed by the above in combination with the width-dependent air-mist secondary cooling and the Dynamic Solidification Control process model.

The Integrated Production Quality System IPQSslab safeguards the slab quality through the monitoring of all relevant measured data.

PT. Gunung orders electric arc furnace and ladle furnace

PT. Gunung, Indonesia, has placed an order with SMS Siemag, Germany, for the supply of an ARCCESS electric furnace and ladle furnace for the new steelmaking plant complex in Bekasi, Indonesian province of West Java.

The furnaces are rated for an annual production of 1.2 million t. The range of charge materials for the electric arc furnace includes scrap, HBI and hot metal. With its new equipment, PT. Gunung will produce high-quality steel and supply the slab caster also ordered from SMS Siemag with liquid steel.

SMS Siemag’s scope of supply includes  the engineering, the mechanical and hydraulic equipment plus the X-Pact electrical and automation systems which will be commissioned according to the proven ‘’Plug & Work’’ concept.

Commissioning of the furnaces is scheduled for the middle of 2013.
Electric arc furnaces of the ARCCESS series are optimized for the highly efficient use of electrical and chemical energy. The electric arc furnace will be equipped with the latest generation of the patented  SIS (SMS Injection Systerm) oxygen injection system, which combines innovative injection and burner technologies. This concept provides its worth through high productivity while keeping production costs low.
At the Bekasi works, PT. Gunung operates a long-product line for the production of sections and wire rods, as well as a flat-product line for the production of heavy plates and pipes. All major production lines were supplied by companies of the SMS group.

New heavy Plate  stand for ThyssenKrupp VDM

ThyssenKrupp VDM GmbH has placed  an order with SMS Siemag for the supply of a new 2.7 m heavy plate stand for their Siegen, Germany, location. With this new millstand, ThyssenKrupp VDM will be able to offer plates with narrower product tolerances and higher plate weights.

The scope of supply of SMS Siemag includes the millstand with X-Pact electrical equipment and automation system, a new hydraulic descaler as well as the complete erection of the new equipment and modification of the foundations. Commissioning is scheduled for the summer of 2013.
The new 2.7 m millstand will replace the current stand from 1954.
The new unit will have a rolling force of 60 MN and be equipped with a hydraulic adjustment system and work roll bending. The millstand will be pre-assembled and tested in the workshop of SMS Siemag in Hilchenbach.
Within the area of automation systems, SMS Siemag will deliver the level-1 systems and level-2 process models with pass schedule calculation system. The automation equipment is set up beforehand in the SMS Siemag test fields, and tested and pre-optimized in accordance with the proven Plug & Work concept.

As part of the modernization, ThyssenKrupp VDM invests a total of about 30 million euros in its plant in Siegen. With the new millstand, ThyssenKrupp VDM will be able to supply its customers with narrower geometrical tolerances and will expand its product range by higher plate weights. ‘’This will open up new opportunities that will open up new opportunities that will give us an additional competitive edge,’’explains Hanno Gerich, plant manager for the Siegen and Altena locations of ThyssenKrupp VDM. At the Siegen site, the company, which is part of the Inoxum group, mainly produces plates from nickel and titanium alloys that are used among others for pipeline and apparatus construction.
