Jammu & Kashmir Industry and Commerce Minister Calls on Union Steel Minister

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Shri S.S. Salathia has called on the Union Minister of Steel Shri Beni Prasad Verma here today.

The Steel Minister discussed the status of the proposed Steel Processing Unit (SPU) at Lassipora, Pulwama, Srinagar and urged the State Minister to provide necessary help to SAIL.

It was decided that SAIL officials would visit Jammu & Kashmir to discuss various issues slowing down the setting up of the SPU. The Chairman SAIL requested Shri Salathia to confirm the benefits being accorded to them by the state government.

SAIL’s proposal for setting-up of SPU at Srinagar was approved ‘in-principle’ by SAIL Board in April 2008. It was envisaged that the SPU would have a 40,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of TMT Bar Mill and Cut to Length & Corrugation unit of 60,000 tpa. The Maharatna PSU had acquired 25 Acre land at Lassipora, Pulwama in October 2009, but the project was affected due to non-availability of concessions by the Government.
