India's score and ranking in Global Adaptation Index

The Global Adaptation Institute is a non-profit environmental organization guided by a vision of building resilience against climate change and other global forces as a key component to sustainable development.

Its mission is to enhance the world's understanding of the urgency for adaptation to climate change and other global forces through private and public investments for developing countries.

The Global Adaptation Institute has developed Global Adaptation Index (GaIn). It summarizes a country's Vulnerability to climate change and other global challenges on the one hand and its Readiness to improve resilience on the other hand. It aims to help businesses and the public sector better prioritize investments for a more efficient response to the immediate global challenges ahead.

India has a score of 53.6 and is ranked 117 on the Global Adaptation Index. The high vulnerability score and low readiness score of India places it in the upper-left quadrant of the Readiness Matrix which illustrates the comparative ability of countries to undertake adaptive actions to increase its resilience to climate change. The vertical axis measures the relative vulnerability of countries. The horizontal axis measures to what degree a country is prepared to deal with climatic and environmental changes. Divisions for the quadrants correspond to the median Vulnerability and Readiness of the world. India has both a great need for investment and innovations to improve readiness and a great urgency for action. It is the 59th most vulnerable country and the 18th least ready country in the world.
