First Ever Meet in India on International Mobile
Telecommunication begins in Goa Tomorrow
Technical Compatibility To be Examined for Successful Implementation of IMT

The first ever meeting in India on International Mobile Telecommuncation (IMT) related issues begins in Goa tomorrow. The Working Party 5D of Radiocommunication Sector of International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) which deals with IMT technology and related issues will meet from 12-19 October 2011. This will among other things discuss the strategy to help the organizations using the IMT bands to plan their network for successful implementation of IMT.

IMT bands are being used by various organizations in India for different applications and services. Meeting in India will help these Indian organizations appreciate the compatibility issues during the course of deliberations.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is hosting this meeting on behalf of the Government of India.

ITU-R Working Party 5D deals with the spectrum issues related to International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT). Since the frequency bands proposed for IMT services are planned to be shared with other services, technical compatibility issues have to be carefully examined for successful implementation of IMT. One of the main objectives of the meeting in Goa is to arrive at consensus on the technical specifications of IMT.

More than 200 delegates from about 50 countries and ITU recognized agencies will participate in the meeting.

ITU-R Study Groups and its Working Parties study the technical issues involved in various radio communication services which forms the basis for World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) held to allocate frequency bands to radio communication services. Next WRC will be held in January-February 2012 in Geneva.
