All Efforts Being Made to Address Power Shortage

The Ministry of Power is making all efforts to fix the problems related to power shortage. Inaugurating the 14th India Power Forum in New Delhi today the Minister of State for Power, Shri K. C. Venugopal said that the power situation is improving and hopefully there will be no power crunch during Deepavali. He said the unexpected rainfall at coal mining areas and strikes in some states caused a big gap in demand and supply of electricity. The Minister informed that the NTPC Plant at Ramagundam which was affected due to strike at Singareni Coal Fields has started generation at full load since yesterday as the strike has been called off. He added that the NTPC has also been asked to speed up the annual maintenance work at its Talcher Power Station in Orissa which should be completed before Deepavali.

Touching upon the theme of the Conference which relates to efficiency improvement, Shri Venugopal said that there is a need to increase efficiency of the existing plants in order to reduce fuel consumptions and carbon emissions. He said the State Utilities are being persuaded to take up renovation and modernisation programmes on priority basis. Highlighting that the Ministry of Power is giving top priority to 4,000 MW Ultra Mega Power Projects, the Minister said that with the adoption of new super critical technology the efficiency of power generation will improve. He said laying new transmission lines to transport power from new generating stations and transfer power from one region to other are also on priority which should improve the efficiency & over all viability of the sector.

Shri Venugopal said that the Government is presently engaged in improving the financial health of Distribution companies. He added that the Sate governments are being advised to introduce system of automatic tariff revision to take care of increasing costs.
