Progress Regarding Undersea Power Transmission Line between India and Sri Lanka

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 9th June, 2010 between the Government of India, Government of Sri Lanka, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited(PGCIL)and Ceylon Electricity Board(CEB)for carrying out the Feasibility Study for interconnection of the India-Sri Lanka Electricity Grids, which inter-alia includes setting up of High Voltage Direct Current Transmission system between the two countries involving under sea transmission as well.

Giving this information in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today, Minister of State for Power Shri K.C.Venugopal said that as per the MOU, both PGCIL and CEB are ‘Executing Agencies’ for carrying out the above mentioned study and would compile data/details of their assigned activities and jointly complete the entire Feasibility Study. He said PGCIL would carry out all activities related to the land portion which falls in India and the entire sea portions, whereas CEB would carry out all activities related to Sri Lankan land portion. The Minister informed that the PGCIL has already completed the assigned work as per the MOU.

Shri Venugopal said that while CEB is carrying out the works assigned to it, it has placed a Letter of Award (LoA) on PGCIL on 16th August 2011 for carrying out some portion of their work. He said the PGCIL has started the work as per LoA of CEB. The Minister added that the entire work related to this Feasibility Study is expected to be completed by 31st December 2011, as agreed to in the Task Force and Steering Committee Meetings held on 3-4 August, 2011 in New Delhi.
