Siemens VAI to Install Dedusting Facilities for New LD Steelmaking Converter at Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) in Russia


Siemens VAI Metals Technologies received a contract from the Russian steel producer OJSC Novolipetsk Steel for the installation of dedusting systems and auxiliary equipment for a new LD (BOF) converter in Steel Works No. 2. The order value for Siemens is a two-digit-million euro figure. Start-up of the 325-ton-capacity converter is tentatively scheduled for 2011. This project for the installation of dedusting facilities is part of a broad company campaign underway at Novolipetsk Steel to considerably reduce emissions from their two oxygen steelmaking works and thus to improve the overall air quality in Lipetsk.
Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) is one of the world’s leading steel companies with its main steelmaking and rolling facility located in Lipetsk, Russia, approximately 500 kilometers south of Moscow. In 2007, the company produced over nine million tons of crude steel in their two LD steelmaking plants comprised of a wide range of carbon and alloy steels. These are sold as slabs, coils (including galvanized and color-coated coils) and sheets, in some 80 countries. The company is also one of the world's leading suppliers of electrical steel grades with a 20 percent share of the global grain-oriented steel market. The main customers are from the construction, automotive, electrical engineering, shipbuilding and household-appliance industries.
A third 325-ton converter is being installed by Novolipetsk Steel in the LD Steelmaking Plant No. 2 in order to increase the annual steel capacity in this mill from approximately 5.5 to 7.6 million tons. In connection with the converter installation, Siemens VAI received a contract for the engineering and the supply of the main equipment for the dedusting and alloying systems. Also included are various components, equipment and automation packages for the converter itself. The dedusting facilities will include primary- and secondary-dedusting. A Baumco wet-type scrubber will be installed for the primary-dedusting system. The scope of supply for the secondary-dedustingsystem comprises the excess-heat-absorber, raw-gas collection ducts, spark arrestor, pulse-jet-type filter-bag house and radial ID (induced draft) fans. Emissions will be exhausted from the immediate vicinity of the converter itself, particularly during charging and tapping, and also from the canopy hood. The material-handling and transport equipment will be supplied and installed, including the related dedusting system. The dust content in the gas exiting the primary- and secondary-dedusting systems will be reduced to the contractually specified values in accordance with the local environmental regulations.
For the converter installation itself, Siemens VAI will provide VAI-CON slag stoppers, a bottom-stirring system to improve steel homogeneity, different valve stands for the O2 lances, a wrecking machine for the removal of worn refractories and also probe manipulators for the temperature measurement and sampling equipment. Dynacon Level 2 process optimization will be installed which, on the basis of the converter offgas analyses, will conduct end-blow calculations for achieving the targeted decarburization level in the steel bath. The process model will also calculate the decarburization rate, the chemical composition of the steel and slag in addition to the temperature of the liquid steel. Converter tap-to-tap times can thus be notably shortened with the application of Dynacon.
All of the associated electrical and automation systems will be provided as part of this project. Advisory services for installation, start-up and commissioning as well as spare parts round off the Siemens VAI scope of supply.
A key reason for the receipt of this contract was the successful implementation of other projects at Novolipetsk Steel, including the installation of new and the modernization of existing continuous slab-casting machines. Currently, the primary- and secondary-dedusting systems of three 160 converters in the LD Steelmaking Plant No. 1 are being modernized by Siemens VAI.
