CPE plant at BHEL in India
Indian-based Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has placed an order with SMS Meer for the modernization of a 25-year-old push bench plant. SMS MEER will upgrade the existing plant to a modern, high-performance CPE (Cross Piercing Elongating) plant. As a result BHEL’s capacity will be doubled to around 100,000 t and its product range extended. With the conversion to modern CPE technology BHEL’s production processes will be more cost-effective and energy-efficient, as material losses are reduced by 65 per cent.
The maximum shell length on the upgraded plant will increase to 16m. The finished tube diameter ranges from 26.7 mm to 159.00 mm. In addition to carbon steels the plant can now also produce low-and high-alloy steels.
With the new seamless tube plant the company can meet the rising demand for boiler tubes for power stations in India. ‘’Following the revamp, BHEL will be able to manufacture extremely robust boiler tubes. These enhance the efficiency of the boiler and demand for them is therefore becoming stronger and stronger,’’ explained Hubert Strank, Project Manager at SMS Meer.
High-alloy materials such as 10CrMo910 or T91 will be used here. Thanks to its expanded portfolio BHEL will be able in future to develop new products in-house, from the production of seamless tubes to the boilers themselves.
The new CPE plant comprises the rotary hearth furnace, new piercing mill, push bench, detaching mill, extended re-heating furnace, modernized stretch-reducing mill, new rotating saw and new cooling bed. The design and manufacture of the mechanical components will be completed jointly by teams from SMS Meer, in Monchengladbach, Germany, and Kolkata, India. The on-site plant erection and commissioning will be carried out by BHEL under the supervision of SMS Meer. Start of production on the new plant is scheduled for the end of 2012.
SMS Meer relocates and modernizes three peeling machines at Dongbei Special Steel
Dongbei Special Steel, based in the port town of Dalian in the northeast of China, has placed an order with SMS Meer, Germany, for the general overhaul of three peeling machines. With this overhaul SMS Meer is ensuring that the required quality in terms of the surface grade and diameter tolerances can be delivered. ‘’With the modernization of the peeling machines Dongbei Special Steel will be better placed in future to meet its customers’ rising demands’’, said Falk Rofseler, Head of After-Sales-Service at the Schumag & Copper product unit. The Chinese company supplies products primarily for the automotive and energy industries.
