         Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce jointly with Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS), Eastern Region office, Kolkata organised an Industry ‘Awareness Programme’ on Product Certification and Management Certification Schemes implemented by BIS.  The speakers highlighted the need for product certification in the competitive era of globalisation. In India, it is mandatory to have product certification on 81 items. As regards Management Certification schemes under ISO 9001, 14000, 15700, 18001, 22001 BIS has established the credentials which is apparent by its long list of client-tale of leading PSUs like NTPC and SAIL. Dr. D. K. Chaudhury, Dy. Director General, Head-ER, informed that BIS is under taking integrated management system certification and in the services sector, it also caters to hospitals, restaurents as well. It is informed that the recent nuclear disaster in Japan has prompted the Atomic Energy Commission to access and evaluate the safety and environmental standards in the nuclear plants in India and BIS is likely to be involved in ascertaining the same. BIS has become very customer friendly and has introduced e-services for the industry where not only the products certification can be viewed but also the competitors in the industry. On the Hallmarking facilities for gold and silver BIS has fully developed facilities and both the industry and the consumers are benefitted of the purity of precious metals at nominal cost. 10 Central Ministries have been roped in by BIS including Income Tax, Excise and Customs to access the quality of services extended by the departments.      

          Shri Sudesh Sonthalia, President, MCC emphasized on the need of quality certification of various services sector which shares more than 50 p.c. of GDP.
