MF Appoints Mr. Shogo Ishii as Director of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has named Mr. Shogo Ishii as Director of the IMF's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP). Mr. Ishii succeeds Mr. Akira Ariyoshi, who is taking an academic post at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo. Mr. Ishii will take up his position at OAP in April.

Mr. Ishii, a Japanese national, joined the IMF in 1981 and has held a variety of senior positions in the Asia and Pacific Department including mission chief to Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam and Senior Resident Representative in Thailand. His IMF career has also included spells in the former Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department and the former Policy Development and Review Department. During 1989-92, Mr. Ishii was an advisor at the Export-Import Bank of Japan. Mr. Ishii holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Economics from Nanzan University and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Oregon.

The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, which is located in Tokyo, is part of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department. Working with staff in Washington, it monitors regional economic and financial developments, participates in regional fora on monetary and finance cooperation, and helps promote dialogue in the region on current issues and challenges in the international financial system as well as on the Fund and its policies.
