Tuticorin Port to be Renamed as Thiru V.O. Chidambaranar Port

Tuticorin Port, which is an icon and an engine for the economic growth of South Tamil Nadu is to be renamed as Thiru. V.O. Chidambaranar Port.

In order to mark the historic occasion, a grand public function is being organized by the Port Management on 19th February, 2011 at S.A.V. School Ground in Tuticorin. The function will be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Shipping, Thiru G.K. Vasan. A galaxy of dignitaries including State Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of State Legislative Assembly, captains of Industries and senior Government officials are likely to grace the occasion. A large number of general public are also likely to attend function.

The descendants of Thiru V.O.Chidambaranar and other legendary freedom fighters like Thiru Subramaniya Bharathiyar, Thiru Vanchi Nathan, Thiru Subramania Siva will be honoured on the occasion by the Union Minister of Shipping.

A Museum is being erected at the venue of the public function. V.O.Chidambaranar Memorabilia like historical documents, paper cuttings of V.O.Chidambaranar era, books, articles, songs on V.O.Chidambaranar, etc. will be displayed. A sound and light show will also be organised on the growth of Indian Shipping Industry. Panels on the growth of the Port is also being erected for information of the public about the developments and future growth potential of the Port. The Union Minister of Shipping is scheduled to inaugurate the Museum on 19-02-2011. The Museum will be thrown open for public viewing thereafter.

It may be mentioned that in order to honour the legendary Freedom Fighter V.O. Chidambaranar and pay homage to him and to remember the ideals and cause for which he sacrificed his life, the Union Cabinet had given its approval at its meeting held on Thursday, 27th January, 2011 for renaming Tuticorin Port as V.O. Chidambaranar Port. The Union Minister of Shipping Thiru G.K. Vasan was instrumental in taking up the proposal for renaming Tuticorin Port as V.O. Chidambaranar Port.
