OVERWHELMING RESPONSE AT MEDICAL CUM VETERINARY CAMP BY INDIAN FORCE RESERVE BATTALION

Feb 6, 2011. Kadugli (South Kordofan).           The medical and veterinary teams of Force Reserve Battalion (FRB) took the onus of reaching out to the people of Sudan through much needed CIMIC camp at a village called Al-Saraf, 5Km south of Kadugli. On 6th Feb 2011, a large scale camp was organized in collaboration with the state Govt of South Kordofan. The event was graced by the benign presence of Mr AK Pandey, the Indian Ambassador to Sudan, Ms Asma Gabril Tia, Minister of Health South Kordofan State, Prof Hamid Agab Moahammad, Minister of Animal Welfare, Col Padam Singh Janghu, Commander of Indian Force Reserve Battallion (FRB) and a number of senior dignitaries of South Kordofan state.

The medical cum veterinary camp organized by the battalion, turned out to be a grand success as local inhabitants showed up in overwhelming strength for the event. This is a direct reflection of the trust built by the medical and veterinary staff of the FRB over a period of time through their hard work and dedication.

The medical team of FRB under Lt Col Jayanta Borah, who has already carved a niche in the hearts of the locals, utilized this opportunity to reach out to people and extend an extensive ‘Health care’ on the spot. A total of seven doctors, who are expert in their respective fields, were present as part of this grand medical camp. The team under Lt Col Jayanta Borah went an extra mile by making available state-of-the-art laboratory facilities on the site including ultrasound, ECG and X-ray. Special care was taken to include an expert lady doctor. The gynecologist lady doctor had to work relentlessly to render consultations to hundreds of local women. Equally enthusiastic was the participation by the local medical staff who, seeing this noble cause of the FRB, readily volunteered in order to assist. He and his team perspired in the scorching heat and provided consultation with free medicines to thousands of people. They also offered an expert diagnostic support for variety of illness and prevalent diseases. A total of 757 people were treated within a span of five hours in one day by the medical team.

The Veterinary staff under the guidance of Lt Col Jagdish made the best of the opportunity and had set up most advanced and elaborate paraphernalia for the “animal-care”. A special attention was paid to this aspect as the cattle play a significant role in the lives of local inhabitants. The skilled assistance provided by the Veterinary staff encompassed multifarious and high-tech facilities eg. “ Disease Diagnostic support, De-worming and vaccination, strengthening of existing Veterinary infrastructure, training Animal Health Workers and assistance to ministry of Animal Wealth”. The local vet staff of the Tristar clinic also took extensive part in this drive. What needs a special mention is that the Vet team of the FRB has an impeccable record of treating animal wealth of the South Kordofan state. The annual average of treatment by them ranges between 25000 and 30000 animals. In addition, it also makes a keen effort to organize Mobile Veterinary Camps in remote villages, on regular basis, for the people who find it difficult to come all the way to Kadugli town. On this day, a total of 1400 animals, including 680 sheep, 460 cattle and 260 donkies, were treated.

The services of FRB, undoubtedly, have been the epicenter of medical and veterinary activities in the South Kordofan state and have singularly earned tremendous goodwill not only for themselves but also for the entire UNMIS as a whole.

Speaking on the occasion, the Indian Ambassador appreciated the good work of the Clinic run by FRB. He was very flabbergasted by the rapport maintained by the clinic amongst the locals. He said, “It is also the occasion to celebrate the values of the cultures of the two countries, India and Sudan, where we worship our “animal wealth” like no other. I believe that the Indian peacekeepers have been performing relentlessly and contributing enormously towards the overall upliftment of the ‘health and animal welfare’ of the people of Sudan. I am sure that this will help us make a niche in the hearts of people of Sudan.”

Ms Asma Gabril Tia, Minister of Health South Kordofan State and Prof Hamid Agab Moahammad, Minister of Animal Welfare also complemented the FRB for the high-quality work & noble gesture by recounting the unprecedented results achieved through hard work by the vet and medical teams.

The day will certainly go down in the annals of UNMIS-CIMIC arena in no less than golden words, all courtesy Force Reserve Battalion (FRB).
