LKAB establishes Public Affairs function in Brussels

LKAB accounts for 90 percent of iron ore production in Europe. The global market for iron ore is characterized by strong demand, and LKAB plans to open three new mines before 2015 to enable a 35-percent increase in production capacity for finished products.

As the sole large-scale European operator with a combination of mining and upgrading to iron ore pellets, LKAB constitutes not only a corporate group, but also an industrial sector.

The company is now strengthening its public-affairs organization by establishing a Public Affairs function in Brussels.
Göran Bäckblom, who was appointed to the position as Vice President Public Affairs, effective 1 January, reports directly to President and CEO Lars-Eric Aaro.

-          LKAB is strongly dependent on developments within the EU in areas such as energy, infrastructure and research policy, says Lars-Eric Aaro. We must therefore have our own representative in Brussels.

Göran Bäckblom was born in 1953 and holds an MSc in Civil and Mining Engineering from Luleå University of Technology. He has been employed in sectors including the power industry and, since 1998, within the Swedish and international mining industry, in national and European-level positions. Göran is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

-          I am very pleased to welcome Göran Bäckblom to LKAB. With his international experience and thorough understanding of our operations, he will provide excellent support for the entire company, concludes Lars-Eric Aaro.
