TAIPA welcomes Minister’s initiatives to engage Industry for formulation of National Telecom Policy 2011

New Delhi: 24 Jan 2011, Tower & Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) is working towards strengthening the role of telecom Infrastructure companies and help them contribute towards the development of the country in a more significant way. TAIPA supports the efforts being made by the Minister for HRD & CIT for greater transparency. Indeed, engaging stakeholders of the Telecom Ecosystem in Round Table Conferences is an apt way to understand issues on the ground.

Keeping pace with the changing times, the Minister for HRD & CIT has planned a comprehensive National Telecom Policy 2011 and thus recognise Telecom as and Infrastructure and Critical service. Such a positive step has already been welcomed by TAIPA. TAIPA delegates have urged the Minister to envisage the role that Telecom Infrastructure can play in achieving the objectives of the Telecom Policy 2011 and promised active support in all such efforts.

“I believe the TAIPA formation is appropriately timed, considering the proposed Telecom Policy. The emergence of sharing between Infrastructure providers and service providers will be the cornerstone in the new telecom environment. This will mark the next phase of growth, which will be represented by broadband, wireless and the emerging mobile Internet society,” said Mr Umang Das, Director General, Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association.

The TAIPA team, led by Industry leaders, proposes to work with the government on affirming that the Infrastructure Industry can deliver far-reaching benefits to citizens and the economy at large. Further, TAIPA has drawn attention to a host of additional services for e-governance and electronic banking -- power facilities for Common Service Centre (CSCs) and Bank ATMs. Telecom towers can help improve the economics of renewable energy, including solar and wind. They can also contribute to security by allowing co-location of surveillance and other community services on their infrastructure, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The TAIPA delegation has urged the Minster to reflect these possibilities in the new Telecom Policy 2011 and promises him active support in his efforts.
