Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel. Power, Light & Lubricants in India (Base: 1993-94 = 100)Review for the week ended 21st August, 2010 



The WPI for the week ended 21st August, 2010 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel. Power, Light & Lubricants’ is given below:



PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%)

The index for this major group rose by 1.4 percent to 312.5 (Provisional) from 308.1 (Provisional) for the previous week.



The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 15.19 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 21/08/2010 (over 22/08/2009) as compared to 14.75 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 14/08/2010) and 8.87 percent during the corresponding week (ended 22/08/2009) of the previous year. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-



The index for 'Food Articles' group rose by 1.8 percent to 303.3 (Provisional) from 297.9 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of fish-inland (22%), fruits & vegetables (4%) and gram (1%). However, the prices of moong and eggs (2% each) and masur (1%) declined.



The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.4 percent to 291.7 (Provisional) from 290.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of raw silk (2%) and groundnut seed, raw cotton, copra and rape & mustard seed (1% each). However, the prices of castor seed (3%), raw rubber (2%) and gingelly seed (1%) declined.



The index for 'Minerals' group rose by 1.4 percent to 867.5 (Provisional) from 855.2 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of fluorite (3%) and barytes and iron ore (2% each). However, the prices of steatite (26%), asbestos (21%) and feldspar (4%) declined.



FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 386.7 (Provisional) from 385.9 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of light diesel oil, furnace oil and aviation turbine fuel (2% each) and naphtha (1%). However, the prices of bitumen (1%) declined.



The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 12.71 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 21/08/2010 (over 22/08/2009) as compared to 12.57 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 14/08/2010) and 8.87 percent during the corresponding week (ended 22/08/2009) of the previous year.
