Indian Steel Industry is gradually positioning itself as a global leader by inching towards capturing the second position in production of steel. Presently the fifth largest steel producer after China, Japan, USA and Russia, India will soon become the second largest steel producer only after China. This was stated by the Minister of Steel, Chemicals & Fertilizers, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan on the occasion of 46th National Metallurgists Day Celebrations at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida today. The Minister said India is endowed with significant ferrous and non-ferrous mineral resources and these rich raw material deposits have played a major role for the steel industry carving out a niche for itself. Commenting on the current global economic situation the Minister said that strong domestic demand and consumption and well managed economic fundamental will enable India to ride out the crisis and emerge stronger and more vibrant.
Expecting marginal variation in the projected Steel production of 124 million tonne by 2011-12, the Minister said India’s Steel industry has a bright future.
He said both the public and private sectors are growing side by side. The industry is aware of the initiatives taken by the Government at national and international forums. Two such strategies are Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol and the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APCDC).
The Minister further said Indian steel industry is focusing on steps like beneficiation of iron ore; selection of a right blend of coal; harnessing of waste energy, control of emissions during iron and steel making; and incorporation of relevant techniques in production processes to ensure a sustainable growth which is technology driven, environment friendly and globally competitive. Later the Minister presented the 46th National Metallurgists ‘Day Awards to the winners.
Dr. Jamshed J Irani, Director Tata Sons Ltd., Mumbai, received the 2008 “Lifetime Achievement” Award. Instituted in 2004 by the Ministry of Steel, the Award aims to recognizes outstanding Lifetime Achievements and original contributions in the fields of metallurgical and industrial professions, R&D, Energy Environment & Waste Management, Leadership, HRD, New Knowledge system, made in the last 30 years having significant impact on National scenario.
Other dignitaries who attended the function included Secretary Steel Shri Rustogi, SAIL Chairman Shri Roongta, President Indian Institute of Metallurgy Shri L. Pugzhnthy and Professor Ranghanathan.
