The future of Heart Surgery now in India

With increasing stress levels, life-style diseases, including heart ailments are on the rise in India and robot assisted surgery promises a way out.

Globally acclaimed specialist of robot assisted surgery, Dr. R. Ravi Kumar, Director, Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease & Robotic Surgery Center at Chettinad Health City (CHC), Chennai says that heart disease is on the rise in India and the age of the persons suffering is reducing everyday, which is an alarming trend.

Talking to Media here, about Robot Assisted Heart surgery, the leading edge technology surgery at CHC, Dr. R. Ravi Kumar, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon said that in the next 5 to 7 years, all major heart surgeries will be done using robots. In fact at the CHC itself, we have carried out 40 surgeries in a span of 10 months and are planning 100 robot assisted heart surgeries to be carried out in the next 12 months. The robot assisted heart surgery is very precise in performance and can do more complex jobs benefiting people with heart ailments. In fact CHC is the only center in Asia, which can perform robotic heart valve replacement surgery. This technique is preferred in countries like the US and Germany. Instead of cutting through the sternum to reach the heart, the space between the ribs is used to carry out the surgery.

Explaining the clear advantage of robotic assisted heart surgery as against regular heart surgery Dr. R. Ravi Kumar said that the cost of the robotic assisted surgery is little higher than the traditional heart surgery, which costs anywhere between Rs. 1.25 to 1.50 lacs at CHC. But the advantage was faster recovery with minimal incision. While the traditional open-heart surgery requires an incision of approximately 22 cms , the robotic assisted heart surgery requires only 4 to 5 cms. The blood loss and tissue damage is very less compared to the other. But the most important factor here is less chances for infection and the stay in the hospital is reduced to half. There is also less pain, less scaring and early return to normal activity.
