PARAMVEERS CELEBRATE GOLDEN JUBILEE

8 MAHAR Regiment celebrated their Golden Jubilee in Morar Cantt today. Lieutenant General Gyan Bhushan, Colonel of The Mahar Regiment addressed the soldiers in a Special Sainik Sammelan. The unit is also known as "Paramveer Chakra Battalion” in Indian Army. The 8th Battalion of the Mahar Regiment was raised as a machine gun battalion in Saugor (MP) in 01 Mar 1962 by Lt Col KJ Joseph. The battalion was converted into standard Infantry battalion in 1964. Since raising the Veer Mahars have proved their mettle and made not only the regiment but the complete nation proud. In various wars and military operations, 8 MAHAR has been awarded 1 Paramveer Chakra, 1 Mahaveer Chakra, 3 Veer Chakra and 13 Sena Medals for gallantry of the dauntless soldiers of the Battalion.
Mrs Usha Chandra, Mother of the Late Capt Sunil Chandra, Veer Chakra, was the Chief Guest on this memorable occasion. Many senior officers, both retired and serving, war veterans and families of war heroes, who laid down their lives in wars fought by 8 MAHAR over the years, arrived to grace the historical occasion from all corners of India. Lt Gen RK Swamy, former Colonel of The Mahar Regiment, Col Kashmir Singh (Retired) and many senior officers exhorted the new generation to upkeep the heroic tradition of “Sacrifice before Self” of the unit. Post and Telegraph Department of India released a special “First Day Cover” to commemorate the occasion of Golden Jubilee.
