Expansion of capacity and product range: Siemens modernizes rolling mill for Italian structural steelmaker Feralpi
Feralpi Siderurgica SpA, based in Lonato (BS), Italy, has placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for a new intermediate mill for its rebar rolling mill No. 1. The plant will be able to roll billets with a larger cross-section when the modernization project has been completed in the fall of 2010. This will also increase its production capacity and widen its range of products.
Feralpi Siderurgica, part of the Feralpi Group, is one of Europe's leading structural steel producers and has production plants in Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The company runs an electric arc furnace-based minimill meltshop with two rolling mills at its Lonato location in Brescia province, Italy. Rolling mill No. 1 has an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes of rebars. The diameter of the rolled products ranges from 12 to 40 millimeters.
Siemens is supplying a new intermediate mill for the rolling mill. This includes two RedRing rolling stands laid out in an H-V arrangement, and the associated hydraulic valve panels. The new equipment will enable the rolling mill to handle larger billets with a square cross-section of up to 160 millimeters. This will increase output, improve cost efficiency and help Feralpi to expand its range of products. The rolling mill will also be fitted with an electromagnetic braking system on the inlet side of the cooling bed. This will allow for uniform braking of the rolling stock during multi-slit operation. Siemens will also provide consulting services for the installation and commissioning of the new intermediate mill. In addition, Siemens will perform a “CE” compliance revision of the entire Rolling mill No. 1.
